Ningxia 宁夏Níngxià
Helan Mountain East: the region critics write about, and the one with the clearest run of public medals.
The desert between the Yellow River and the Helan Mountains was turned over to vines from the late 1990s. Jancis Robinson’s 2012 reports are still the clearest English introduction: ripening that stays cool into September and October, and direct local-government support, then led by Cao Kailong. The same year, Jim Boyce organised a tasting of 39 Ningxia wines judged by Robinson, Georg Riedel and others. Liz Thach MW wrote it up.
In 2014 Wine Spectator reported that Ningxia had set up a five-tier winery classification modelled on the Bordeaux ranking of 1855, renewed every two years. James Suckling later noted that Helan Qingxue, where Zhang Jing makes the wine, was promoted to Second Growth in 2019, and that she was trialling Malbec. In one of his Ningxia tastings of about 150 Chinese wines, 55 percent scored 90 or above. A decade earlier, he wrote, the Chinese wine he remembered was Grace Vineyard Chairman’s Reserve 2006, at 86.
The bottle most often cited as the turn is still Helan Qingxue’s Jia Bei Lan, a Decanter World Wine Awards International Trophy in 2011. In 2025 the same competition gave China its first Best in Show awards. One was Dongfang Yuxing’s Geruihong Yeguangbei 2022, from Hongsipu, at the southern end of the Helan Mountain East foothills, about two hours from Yinchuan. Li’s Estate’s Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 took a Platinum at 97. Pernod Ricard’s Helan Mountain Xiao Feng Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 took a Gold at 95. Decanter’s results coverage credits Ningxia with 81 medals that year: one Best in Show, one Platinum, five Gold, 31 Silver and 43 Bronze.
Suckling’s Ningxia report also discusses Kanaan, where Wang Fang makes Cabernet blends and Riesling, and a project called Lingering Clouds. Robinson, in a separate blind tasting, rated Kanaan best overall, and listed Silver Heights and Helan Qingxue among the wines that rose above a field she found marked by crude oak and sweetened reds.
Visits you can actually read in advance: Xige Estate at Qingtongxia asks for a free reservation a day ahead; Château Changyu Moser XV is described by Ningxia tourism copy as a 4A scenic spot; Chandon China, at Yongning, has published advance-booked tastings, about an hour from Yinchuan Hedong airport. Silver Heights, Kanaan, Helan Qingxue, Dongfang Yuxing and Li’s Estate do not have a booking page confirmed here. Decanter has cited a regional portal, wineningxia.com. Use it as a list, then confirm each estate.
Background notes also name Château Mihope, Yuanshi and Lansai among Yinchuan estates that welcome visitors. Websites and rules for those three were not confirmed, so they do not have entries. Xi Xia King is included, because Robinson named it in 2012; Dynasty, named in the same sentence, is not, because the article does not give it a region.
Getting there
Hub
The airport named in these sources is Yinchuan Hedong. LVMH’s Chandon tasting note puts that estate about an hour by road from Yinchuan Hedong airport or Yinchuan railway station.
South of the city
Decanter China describes Hongsipu, where Dongfang Yuxing’s Best in Show wine is made, as about two hours from Yinchuan.
Booking
Xige Estate at Qingtongxia asks for a free reservation one day ahead on the estate’s WeChat account. The account name is on the visit page; it is not reprinted here. Chandon’s published tasting is booked in advance, and the hours on that listing belong to the event. Château Changyu Moser XV is described by Ningxia tourism copy as a 4A scenic spot; a current ticket is not reprinted here. Silver Heights, Kanaan, Helan Qingxue, Dongfang Yuxing and Li’s Estate have no booking page confirmed here. Decanter has cited wineningxia.com as a regional list. Use it, then confirm each estate.
Season
A visiting season for the region is not published in these sources. Robinson’s 2012 account describes ripening that stays cool into September and October. That is about the grapes, not a tourist calendar.
