Shangri-La wine region: a visitor’s guide to Deqin’s wine villages

Shangri-La wine region at a glance

What the published accounts say about a trip through the Shangri-La wine region: the road from Lijiang, the Deqin wine villages, the wineries those accounts name, and harvest. A tasting stop is included only when a page already describes one.

Where the Shangri-La wine region is

The region sits inside the Three Parallel Rivers area of the Hengduan Mountains, where the upper Yangtze, the Mekong and the Salween run through neighbouring valleys. Vino Joy’s Carol Yuan, who visited seven wineries during the September 2026 harvest, puts the core vineyards along the Jinsha and Lancang valleys at about 1,700 to 2,800 metres, at around 28 degrees north. Research cited by Vino Joy puts rainfall in the core river valleys at around 300 to 600 millimetres a year, with strong sunlight. Shangri-La Winery’s own site gives 1,800 to 2,800 metres for its Deqin vineyards.

Do not expect the long, continuous vineyards of Ningxia. Yuan describes turning a corner on a mountain road to find a parcel of vines, sometimes less than a hectare and sometimes a few hectares, beside a village on the slope. That is why producers here talk about villages rather than one big region. For how Yunnan fits alongside Ningxia, Shandong and the other regions, see our Chinese wine guide and the Yunnan wine guide.

Yuan’s route went north from Lijiang, past Tiger Leaping Gorge, along mountain roads into the region. Her group crossed Baima Snow Mountain at around 4,000 metres and continued towards the foot of Meili Snow Mountain. She calls it a more physically demanding wine trip than her earlier visits to Ningxia and Hebei.

A 10-day, nine-night “Greater Shangri-La” wine-tourism loop reported by the Chinese trade site WineChina in January 2026 follows the same spine. It starts in Lijiang, runs north on National Road 214 through Shangri-La city to Benzilan in Deqin, crosses Baima Snow Mountain into the Lancang canyon and the Meili wine area, then continues north to Yanjing in Mangkang (Markam), in Tibet. The accompanying wine-tourism map for Diqing marks 36 wine-grape villages, 30 existing or planned wineries and eight wine landmarks.

Treat road times as unknown until you check them locally. Neither source prints drive times, and mountain roads in this area are long and winding.

Deqin’s wine villages to know

  • Sinong (斯农). One of the few places in the region with fairly concentrated vineyards. Shangri-La Winery lists a Sinong vineyard at 2,300 metres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. Niuba, a hamlet of Sinong near Niuba Hot Spring and the Lancang River, is exposed to a strong valley wind.
  • Adong (阿东), Mingyong (明永) and Dongshui (东水). Other village names that producers now put on labels and vineyard lists in the Meili area.
  • Hongpo (红坡). Home of Xiao Ling’s 2,650-metre Chardonnay plot. Hongpo Chardonnay 2021 was JamesSuckling.com’s China Wine of the Year 2023.
  • Guonian (果念). Si Mang Winery’s vineyard there sits on schist weathered into loose sand and powder, which Yuan found hard to keep her footing on.
  • Rongzhong (荣中). Shangri-La Winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard on the right bank of the Lancang, at 2,200 metres.
  • Cizhong (茨中). Not a vineyard stop but the region’s landmark. Shangri-La Winery’s site says French missionaries came to Deqin in 1848 and built a Catholic church at Cizhong, bringing vine growing and winemaking with them. The WineChina loop includes Cizhong church as a stop in the Meili wine area, where its map also lists Songtsam, Xiao Ling and Ao Yun.

According to Xiao Ling owner Bertrand Cristau, quoted by Vino Joy, Xiao Ling and Ao Yun began naming grape origins by village around 2018, and other wineries followed with Sinong, Mingyong, Adong and Hongpo.

Shangri-La wineries

These are the producers named in the sources above. A name on this list is not a confirmed visit.

  • Shangri-La Winery (香格里拉酒庄). The region’s best-known domestic producer, headquartered in the Songyuan area of the Shangri-La Economic Development Zone, with vineyards in Deqin villages including Sinong and Rongzhong. Its website is shangeri-la.com and its service line is 400-0179993. Vino Joy credits a regional wine map to the Shangri-La Winery Visitor Center.
  • Ao Yun (敖云). LVMH’s high-altitude estate. When Grape Wall of China visited in December 2023, the manager said the winery was not yet open to casual visitors. Check before you go; see Ao Yun.
  • Xiao Ling (霄岭). Owned by Bertrand Cristau, with Feng Jian as winemaker according to JamesSuckling.com. Hongpo Chardonnay 2021 was JamesSuckling.com’s China Wine of the Year 2023. That report says that, for the first time, the award was a white wine.
  • DRESMO Winery, in Hachong village near Benzilan. Yuan met two local Tibetan women there, Sina Zhima and Zhaxi Quzong, who work at the winery and have begun welcoming visitors and selling local honey and tomatoes.
  • Si Mang, Ji Jian, Muhan and Domaine Floraisin also hosted Yuan in 2026. Domaine Floraisin focuses mainly on white wines.

When to visit: the Shangri-La harvest

Grapes at different heights ripen weeks apart, so harvest stretches from early September to late October, according to Vino Joy. Shangri-La Winery describes picking in late September and October after a growing season of 180 to 200 days. In mid to late September, Yuan found much of Deqin’s Cabernet Sauvignon still on the vine.

Harvest is the most vivid time to see the villages. Yuan describes pickers heading into the terraces before 7 a.m. and carrying baskets of about 20 kilograms uphill. It is also the busiest time for winery teams, who drive between villages to judge ripeness.

What the wines taste like

Shangri-La Chardonnay has drawn the headlines, but Yuan came away more taken with the Cabernet Sauvignon. She repeatedly found red fruit, floral notes, fine, sometimes powdery tannins and vivid acidity, rather than the blackcurrant-and-cedar profile she expected. Even Shangri-La Winery’s Rongzhong Village Cabernet Sauvignon 2020, which kept classic notes of herbs, blackcurrant and black pepper, opened up to rose-like floral notes in her glass. If you are pairing these wines at a Chinese table, see wine pairing with Chinese food.

Before you book

  • Write first. Few estates publish tasting hours or a booking page. Contact the winery before you travel, and do not plan a day around a door you have not confirmed.
  • Allow time. Yuan’s group took eight days to visit seven wineries. Vineyards are split across many villages, and plots are often small.
  • Plan for altitude. Passes reach about 4,000 metres on the way in.
  • Use a local driver or agency. Roads are narrow and winding, and the sources here publish no public transport or road times for the winery villages.
  • For other estates in China that do publish visits, see our China wine travel guide.
